How it works
How to make a family tree in three simple steps
If you know your family, you can build the tree — no research or special words needed.
- 01
Name your tree
Call it “Johnson Family” or anything you like, and start with yourself.
- 02
Add your family
Add parents, children, partners, brothers and sisters. A name is enough — dates and a photo can come later.
- 03
See how everyone is related
The tree arranges itself and shows how each person is related to you. Nothing to draw.

What you can do
Everything you need to create a family tree
Simple enough to start in minutes, useful enough to keep for years.
Build your family tree
Add people and say how they're related. The tree arranges itself and shows how everyone is related to you.
Remember every birthday
Give each person a photo, their birthday, places and notes. On the Family plan, get a friendly email before each birthday.
Share it privately
Send a private link and an access code. Relatives can look without signing up, and you choose what they see.
Print, save and export
On the Family plan, print your tree as a poster or a book, save it as a picture, or download it for Excel or another family tree app.
Every kind of family
Step-parents, adoption, half-siblings and second marriages — all shown clearly and named correctly.
Build it together
On the Family plan, invite relatives to help add people. You can see who changed what, and undo anything.
Family timeline
See your family's story in order, decade by decade, with “on this day” memories.
Import from other apps
Started a tree in another app? Bring it here with a GEDCOM file — free on every plan.

FAQ
Family tree questions, answered
How to make a family tree, who can see it, and what it costs.
How do I make a family tree?
Create a free FamTwig account, name your tree and start with yourself. Then add a parent, child, partner, brother or sister — a name is enough. The tree arranges itself and shows how everyone is related to you.
Is FamTwig a free family tree maker?
Yes. The free plan lets you build a family tree of up to 50 people and share it with a private link, and it stays free. The Family plan ($29.99 a year) adds room for 1,000 people, more trees, export, unlimited private links and relatives who help edit; Family Plus ($59.99 a year) holds 5,000, billed yearly through Paddle.
Do I need to know anything about genealogy?
No. You add people and say how they're related — parent, child, partner — and the tree does the rest. There are no special words to learn.
How do I share a family tree with relatives?
Make a private link, then send the link and its access code to your family. They can look at the tree without signing up, and they can't change anything. You choose whether they see full birthdays, places, photos, notes or contact details. On the Family and Family Plus plans you can make a separate link for each group you share with — each with its own code and its own choice of details.
Can other family members help edit the tree?
Yes, on the Family and Family Plus plans. Invite relatives by email and they edit with their own free account. You can see who changed what, and undo any change.
Is my family's information public?
No. Your tree is private, and it never appears in search results. Profile photos are stored privately and only shown to people who can see your tree.
Can I import a tree I made in another app?
Yes, on every plan. Download a GEDCOM (.ged) file from the app or website you used and import it here — people, dates, places, partners and parents come across. On the Family and Family Plus plans you can also export your tree as GEDCOM at any time.
Can I print my family tree?
Yes, on the Family and Family Plus plans. Print the tree on one page or as a poster over several pages (A4, Letter, A3 or A2), print a list of people or a family book, or save the tree as a picture.
What happens if I go back to the free plan?
Nothing is deleted. You keep every person, photo and tree, but you can't add more than the free plan allows. Share links after your first one are paused, relatives you invited can still view the tree but not edit it, and export and reminder emails stop (upcoming dates still show in the app). It all comes back when you upgrade again.
Does it work for blended and adoptive families?
Yes. You can add birth, adoptive, step and foster parents, second marriages and former partners. Half-brothers, half-sisters and step-siblings are named correctly.
